Climate change, the new normal, induced by human, is threatening various ecosystems, causing loss of biodiversity, land degradation, disruption in the timing of natural events and cycles, disease spread, reduced ecosystem services, and harming food webs. Changes in the mean conditions, which result into wildfires, ocean acidification, flood and landslides, typhoons, drought are costing the economy. Climate change is predicted to cost the world economy, $23 trillion by 2050 to $178 trillion over the next five decades, and this cost is disproportionate, where the major brunt is borne by the poor. Piarre grasslands of North America, Boreal Forest of Canada, Freshwater basins of the US, Mediterranean marine ecosystems, China’s mountain ecosystems, and Island ecosystem of The Bahamas are some of the highly vulnerable ecosystems that have been documented. Wetlands, the largest carbon sink and regulator of water cycle, whose biogeochemistry and operation can be significantly impacted by changes in hydrology and rising temperatures. Wetlands’ transformation from a carbon sink to a carbon source demonstrates how this might change advantageous services into detrimental ones. Large numbers of disadvantaged people who depend on ecosystem services for a portion of their livelihoods are supported by wetlands’ high productivity. To build resilience to the current situation, sustainable management is essential. This is achieved by comprehending the natural dynamics of climate impacts and addressing them at their source. Those who rely on these services for their daily lives prioritize their immediate survival over the long-term goal of sustainable ecosystem management.
