Climate Change Mitigation Through Ecosystem Restoration in the Bamenda III Municipality, Cameroon

Land cover change significantly contributes to climate change, directly impacting ecosystem services. This study aims to: (1) evaluate the impact of land cover change and urbanisation on climate change, and (2) explore ecosystem restoration as a strategy for mitigating climate change. The objectives were achieved through land cover change analysis using Landsat images, assessment of local meteorological data to determine rainfall and temperature trends, and documentation of local ecosystem restoration initiatives by civil society organisations. The findings indicated that urbanisation in the Bamenda III Municipality has led to a significant loss of vegetation and the conversion of wetlands to human settlements and agricultural land. Local meteorological records also showed a rise in temperatures alongside a decrease in rainfall. To address these issues, civil society organisations, in partnership with the local government, have implemented sustainable development and ecosystem conservation strategies in the municipality. These efforts include the incorporation of green infrastructure, urban green planning strategies, and community engagement to enhance the resilience of urban ecosystems, ultimately serving as Nature-based Solutions to mitigate climate change.
