In this chapter, I explore how the constant human desire for social recognition has taken on a new form in the context of surrogacy. I argue that for many women, offering their wombs has become a way of gaining recognition in a society that too often values them primarily for their reproductive capacity. I argue that this phenomenon must be understood within the broader context of reification, an unresolved problem that continues to affect women and children in particular. The romanticization of love has contributed to a vision of motherhood that ignores the intrinsic bond between mother and child, while reproductive technologies have further encouraged the instrumentalization of women's bodies. In a market that justifies commodification in the name of individual freedom, surrogacy has become a normalized yet invisible form of reification. This chapter calls for a critical examination of the social pathologies that result from this misguided search for recognition.

A Yearning for Recognition: The Reification of Surrogates

摘要
