In his latest book Der arbeitende Souverän: Eine normative Theorie der Arbeit (2023) Axel Honneth now sets out to reintroduce back into the horizon of reflection of Critical Theory precisely that sphere of labor that Habermas seemed to have excluded. What Honneth proposes in this book is, then, to attend to that absence of the sphere of labor that has emerged on the basis of modern capitalism and that is central to determine the possibilities of citizens to participate in the process of democratic formation of the will. It could be said in a certain sense that Honneth reintroduces again “a materialist basis” in contemporary political philosophy from a redefinition -and expansion- of the concept of labor. It is necessary to point out, however, some of the plans of discussion to which Honneth invites in his analysis. The first of these has to do with what is to be understood by “labor.” Indeed, one might ask whether some passages in Marx’s own work do not already offer a very promising starting point for developing an expanded understanding of labor that could place Honneth’s conceptualization on perhaps a broader horizon. The second problem concerns the way in which Honneth understands and argues for one of the three currents of critique of the social organization of labor in modern capitalist societies. The third problem has to do with the absence of a critique to of the way in which the system of labor is organized and structured in its totality in modern societies in terms of what is produced -and what is consumed- The fourth and last problem concerns the political-spatial framework in which Honneth locates his analysis. Indeed, his analysis focuses only on the way in which the system of social labor is organized in the developed capitalist countries of Western Europe and, of course, in the United States of America, excluding a number of traits that are constitutive of social labor systems in countries outside this geographical, economic and political region.

摘要
