The Battle of the Gods and Giants is Plato’s famous picturing of the schism within philosophy between materialism (matter) and idealism (mind). This schism has shaped philosophy in various ways, culminating in Cartesian dualism. Plato argues that we must find a middle way and Aristotle identifies this “middle” with the reality that contains both mind and matter. This is how Aristotle develops and naturalises Plato. As regards how modern philosophy treats this impasse we consider both modern “Gods” such as Husserl, Peirce, Cassirer, Whitehead, Merleau-Ponty, Heidegger, Derrida, Baudrillard etc. and the terrible cottage-industry of reductionism churned out by the modern “Giants.” Despite any advances made, we see that we are still trapped within the false paradigm of Cartesian dualism and within Plato’s “interminable” battle of the Gods and Giants.
