This chapter discusses the initial steps taken by artists to present their works to a larger public, specifically, the exhibition at the Society of Art facility, Vauxhall Gardens and the Foundling Hospital. These early endeavors to connect with an anonymous audience contained the roots from which the art market of an expanding consumer society would grow.
