Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery is a common procedure used in advanced coronary disease to improve blood flow to the heart (i.e., revascularization). Patients with severe, multiple-vessel disease can benefit significantly from CABG in terms of symptom relief and improved survival. The surgery involves taking a section of an artery or vein (graft) and placing it in such a way that bypasses a blockage, allowing an alternate route to the occluded arteries. Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is another available treatment option that involves placing stent(s) to increase the diameter of a restricted artery—this is usually reserved for patients with less severe disease. Both CABG and PCI are vital treatment options for coronary disease and are generally well tolerated by patients.
