Pacemakers are implantable heart devices that are used to manage slow heart rhythms. Many different types of pacemaker options, including standard and leadless, are available for use in patients with symptoms caused by an underlying heart rhythm problem. On the other hand, implantable cardioverter defibrillators are devices used to monitor and treat fast heart rhythm problems by delivering electrical shocks in patients with severe arrhythmias. Alternative options like wearable defibrillators are helpful if a patient is not a candidate. These alternative options are also useful as bridge therapy while patients await a heart transplant. A thorough discussion with a cardiologist is needed before deciding on if a patient needs a device and/or what kind of device may be indicated.
