A New Proposal for Team Ranking in First Division of Spanish Football League
摘要
We introduce a novel methodology for ranking teams in the first division of the Spanish football league. Given the outcomes of the fixtures in a match-week (round or jornada in Spanish), our approach ranks teams based on three criteria: two dependent on the results of the fixtures (goal difference and scored or conceded goals) and a third feature employed as a tie-breaking rule, namely each team’s position in the preceding round’s ranking. Upon ranking the teams, our method assigns 25, 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, and 1 point, respectively, to the top ten teams. This yields a ranking associated with each round and, by accumulating these points across consecutive rounds, produces a final classification for the entire season. We apply our methodology to the 2022–2023 and 2023–2024 championships and utilize a measure of Competitive Balance to compare the resulting series of rankings with the official ones. For the studied seasons, our proposed method exhibits a higher Competitive Balance than the official system. Furthermore, our approach selects the same teams for the Champions League as the official method. The method is likely to increase fan interest by offering teams more opportunities to attain top positions.
