In the Conclusion I will first consider the relations between epistemic stances, as discussed in Part I, and metaphysical stances, as discussed in Part II, their similarities and differences. I shall outline the positions the empiricist and the realist ought to take with respect to both the meta-level questions—should the relevant positions be construed as stances?—and the lower-level questions—what stance should we adopt?—for both epistemic and metaphysical stances. I shall then conclude by considering the normative question of whether, assuming that I am right about the existence of and role played by epistemic and metaphysical stances in science and philosophy, we should regard this fact as cause for celebration or lamentation.
