Exploring Micro-segregation in Thessaloniki: A Case Study of Kordelio-Evosmos
摘要
Social segregation is the spatial expression of social exclusion and pertains to the spatial dimension of inequalities in all their aspects. In the literature, social segregation is extensively studied in specific areas but less so at the level of micro-segregation. In the present research, we focus on the case of the city of Thessaloniki, Greece, and specifically on the municipality of Kordelio-Evosmos. The city of Thessaloniki exhibits a consolidated social structure, where the middle and high social strata of the population are concentrated in the east and center, while the lower social strata are concentrated in the west. A municipality located in the west, which aligns with this description, is Kordelio-Evosmos. With its distinctive historical background and unique characteristics, it presents an ideal subject for research. In this paper, we investigate the socio-spatial distribution of the population of Kordelio-Evosmos on a local scale. In particular, aiming to identify differences within the municipality, where the social structure of the population differs locally from the broader area, we conducted a low-scale analysis. Through this analysis and mapping, we seek to identify and highlight aspects of social segregation in the municipality of Kordelio-Evosmos that are not apparent on a larger scale. By combining this analysis with the theoretical framework of relevant literature on the concepts of social exclusion and segregation, the paper draws conclusions and defines the social structure of the population in the study area.
