Current clinical diagnostic criteria for the diagnosis of Alzheimer disease (AD) include imaging biomarkers as complementary tools that increase the etiological probability of AD. Molecular imaging biomarkers provide additional information on amyloid and tau burden and neurodegeneration that are very helpful in supporting the etiological and differential diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases associated with dementia, especially in atypical clinical presentations and in the presence of comorbidities. In addition, with the recent availability of disease-modifying therapies, molecular imaging biomarkers are beneficial for patient eligibility and response monitoring to amyloid therapy.
