This chapter deals with plaques and monuments erected during the 1980s that are explicitly dedicated to key political personalities of the Second Spanish Republic, such as Manuel Azaña, Indalecio Prieto, Francisco Largo Caballero, Julián Besteiro and Clara Campoamor. The chapter enquires why precisely these and no other representatives of the republic were honoured and reconstructs the process of erecting the memorials, the inauguration speeches and performances, and the reactions in the press, developing a phenomenology of the memorials that makes it possible to identify the political semantics constructed around Spain’s republican heritage during the transition. As the analysis will show, this semantics of the past was intended to form a pillar of the new democracy under construction.
