In order to gain a better understanding of the political constraints that inform the memory of the Second Republic in the post-Franco democracy, this chapter addresses the way this epoch was evoked throughout the twentieth century, from the Second Republic’s politics of memory to the twenty-first-century memory boom. This establishes the background against which the specificity of Madrid’s 1980s memorials evoking the Second Republic, which are addressed in the following chapters, can be properly understood.
