Even though disinformation is not a new problem in Japanese society, threat perception has been low in Japan, and until recently, few measures have been taken to combat disinformation. However, this situation has finally changed, and a number of actors in Japan have begun to take measures against disinformation. This chapter reviews the history of disinformation that has spread through various media in Japan, focusing on a number of examples, and discusses the latest efforts to combat disinformation by the government, media, private sector, and civil society organizations, and the challenges they face.

Even though disinformation is not a new problem in Japanese society, threat perception has been low in Japan, and until recently, few measures have been taken to combat disinformation.
