The Role of the Audit Client’s Use of Blockchain Technology in Increasing the External Auditors Assessment of the Risk of Material Misstatements: A Field Study
摘要
Companies are increasingly adopting advanced and modern technologies for recording and presenting accounting information, as well as for designing and implementing their internal control systems. Blockchain technology is one of the technologies that can be utilized by companies across various sectors. Therefore, this study aims to examine the role of audit clients’ adoption of blockchain technology in the heightened assessment of the risk of material misstatements by external auditors—specifically, client-related risks that auditors are required to evaluate when planning an audit, in compliance with international auditing standards. To achieve the objectives of this study, the opinions of 309 auditors working in the Middle East were surveyed through a questionnaire that outlined factors likely to contribute to the increased assessment of the risk of material misstatements associated with clients using blockchain technology in their operations. Through statistical analysis using SPSS, the study found that the sample agreed on the significant positive role of clients’ use of blockchain technology in increasing the assessment of both inherent risk and control risk, thereby raising the overall evaluation of the risk of material misstatements.
