Becoming an Urban Citizen? Social Relationships and the Self-Development of Internal Migrants in Guangzhou, China

This chapter examines the relationship between urban diversity, internal migration, and urban politics in Chinese cities. Focusing on Shipai Village in Guangzhou, the study centers on Chinese internal migrants, analyzing how state policies (through the hukou system) regulate urban diversity. It explores the strategies which migrants use to navigate constraints and opportunities in their everyday lives. Through their efforts, they strengthen their capacity for social navigation. The chapter reveals how these migrants pursue aspirations for themselves and their families. It underscores their roles in shaping their own urban experiences. The analysis contributes to understanding the interplay of policy, agency, and urban transformation. Overall, this study highlights the complexities of migration and governance in shaping contemporary urban China.
