The relevance of betel nut (Areca catechu L.) can be traced from ancient Sanskrit literature. India leads in growing betel nut, covering most of the world's land and production. Major areca growing regions in India include Kerala, Karnataka, and Assam. These regions account for 90% of the total land area and 95% of the overall production of betel nut. It is an economically important crop in countries like Pakistan and India while in Micronesia and Fiji, betel nut surpasses the local production and annual importation for cultural considerations. This chapter provides overview of the taxonomy, varieties, and the production pattern of betel nut. India’s production has grown a great deal lately, making up a large share of the world’s total. Betel Nut varieties are based on color such as red nuts has high priced. Our aim is to describe detailed overview of betel nut; focusing on lab-based growing methods and breeding ways that can greatly help farming. Effective techniques for development from somatic cells have been developed, and genetic fidelity has been investigated using molecular markers, particularly RAPD markers. The various cropping methods, irrigation needs, and appropriate field conditions, as well as the different ways the betel nut is put to use are discussed. All this research helps in bringing about better sustainable agriculture through better knowledge of the biology and cultivation practices of the betel nut.
