Tossa Jute (Corchorus olitorius L.) Breeding

Tossa jute (Corchorus olitorius L.) has been instrumental in fundamental human needs, encompassing package, food, health, attire, shelter, and means of transportation. From ancient to modern times. People utilize various parts of the jute plant including natural fiber and other components to make a wide range of products. This chapter offers a summary and constraints of the approaches and accomplishments of the breeding strategies and achievements in tossa jute breeding, encompassing germplasm management, evaluation and diversity, utilization of different plant parts, conventional and modern breeding methods, including selection, hybridization, genetics of key agronomic traits, genes and genomics, marker-assisted breeding, gene editing and genetic engineering. However, there has been a gradual decline in the production of jute fiber due to the extensive use of synthetic fibers and the emergence of other natural fibers, that request some transformation of breeding objectives and cultivation patterns. To address this, it is more important to cultivate higher yielding varieties, that are adaptable to non-agricultural land or resistant to abiotic stress, while also developing cost effective cultivation methods and exploring new uses for jute. Nevertheless, traditional breeding techniques, including line breeding (pedigree selection), induced mutagenesis, and cross-breeding (hybridization), face limitations in improving yield and quality. Currently, the genomes of both tossa jute and white jute have been sequenced, placing jute breeding at the forefront of the genomic era. Furthermore, advancements in accurate germplasm identification, the discovery of new genes and transcription factors, developments in bioinformatics and data analyses, progress in transgenic technologies, and collaboration between breeders and researchers from various industries will drive a significant revolution in jute improvement and utilization.
