Scholars contend that school-led family engagement programs can play a role in reducing disparities in educational outcomes. Yet, effectively leveraging these programs for this purpose presents challenges. Families may encounter obstacles that limit their participation in school-led programs while many common forms of school-led family engagement show only marginal associations with student achievement. To explore how school-led family engagement programs might contribute to reducing disparities in educational outcomes, this chapter discusses existing international research on different forms of home- and school-based family engagement. It then describes scholarship on barriers to participation in school-led family engagement programs and strategies to overcome these barriers. This chapter concludes by outlining an agenda for future research with the goal of identifying effective school-led family engagement programs through rigorous causal analysis.
