Mapping BSU Strategy and Implementation of University’s Measures for Achieving the Interlinked and Integrated Sustainability Development Goals
摘要
Sustainability is now acknowledged as a significant field and the primary issue facing our contemporary society. Universities have a crucial role to play in advancing sustainability, but to do so successfully, they must first be sustainable. Through this work, we outlined the framework for Beni-Suef University’s integrated sustainability approach hoping to successfully accomplish its five strategic sustainable targets and ensuring a sustainable university. The framework for sustainability approach in BSU showed three main components with sub-factors that are related to the environment management, public work and social responsibility and teaching and research. To measure the effectiveness of this proposed sustainability approach, the university should set a clear target for each specific factor of each approach’s pillar and then needs to measure that factor in an agreed time interval. Here, it was also showed what BSU needs to get feedback on the effectiveness of the proposed framework and to evaluate its impact on the university sustainability. We finally shed light on the reality of BSU’s sustainability by identification of some sustainability-related initiatives performed at the university. The following are some examples for sustainability achievements in 2022 due to BSU’s initiatives for sustainability; teaching 24,872 sustainability courses, allocating $1,086,300 from the research fund to support sustainability research, more than 200 kg of paper and plastic were processed, 20 million Egyptian pounds annual average for comprehensive periodic maintenance, producing more than 4265 pieces of offices, halls and gardens from recycling of wood remains, the consumption of 200,000 m3 of water was rationalized, receiving more than 74,000 patients in university hospitals, carbon footprint decreased by 14% compared to the previous year, 926 events and activities were launched to serve sustainability goals, and more than 55 global, regional and domestic partnerships.
