We illustrate here the University of Cagliari’s (UniCA, Italy) commitments and actions put in place to achieve a Sustainable Development and provide a perspective analysis of their implications and future developments. The participation of the University of Cagliari to the UI Green Metric Ranking of World Universities (UI-GM) allowed an overall improvement of the sustainability actions across different operational categories and stimulated a reorganization of the otherwise scattered information from diverse operational sectors into a cohesive management system. Data, some monitored for the first time ever, and indicators were obtained by an interdisciplinary team led by the UniCA representatives within the Italian Network of Universities for the Sustainable Development (RUS), jointly with the UniCA Green Team. Such interdisciplinary collaboration appeared crucial in defining effective and shared strategies and initiatives to support UniCA managers in their work as well as academics to design their courses and research programs, by promoting the engagement of the territory in sustainable development actions. The results of our analysis suggest the need of a continuous improvement of the sustainability assessment process, conceived as a learning process involving multiple subjects, disciplines, and skills, ultimately allowing the UniCA governance to increase its sustainability with appropriate decisions. We also provide suggestions for the improvement of the current set of indicators, to better frame global targets to local conditions.

摘要
