Implementing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is one of the important and challenging issues facing all communities world-wide and, while achieving SDGs falls within the responsibility of the United Nations, states of the world have their own responsibility to shoulder in this respect which must involve their decision and policy makers, educational institutions (universities, colleges, institutes…etc.) and student community being the cornerstone of society and its progress. One of the tasks universities must address concerning SDGs is spreading awareness among students, encouraging them to carry out environmental activities and become an actor in this regard through participating in the workshops and activities held by individual universities. While this represents an integral part of the duties these institutions must fulfil towards preserving a healthy environment locally and internationally, it will prove instrumental for realising the SDGs. Iraq, among other Arab countries in the region, is now facing many environmental risks. Nineveh Governorate suffered grave destruction during the war with ISIS which has led to the collapse of the environment and resulted in its exposure to many problems (air pollution, poor electricity supply, the disappearance of the green zone—water shortage… etc.). Al-Noor University, being a pioneering private university in the Nineveh Governorate, attaches great importance to SDGs and exerts unwavering efforts to achieve them, which reveals how committed it is to improve the Nineveh Governorate ecosystem. Through its implementation of these SDGs, this university has indeed made successful steps aimed at preserving energy and controlling climate change by exploiting solar energy using photovoltaic panels as an alternative source of energy. It has also launched several campaigns including tree-planting and annual reforestation, in addition to installing greenhouses and preserving green spaces on campus. At the same time, Al-Noor University has addressed the issue of transport, providing spacious, comfortable buses to transport students to and from the campus, thus reducing the number of private vehicles and preserving a healthy environment free from car smoke pollution. Through all these activities, Al-Noor University aims to join the prestigious International Ranking Systems that are concerned with sustaining environmental development and evaluating the performance of universities in preserving the environment. One such Ranking is the UI Green Metric, which is concerned with environmental issues, and includes 16 indicators subsumed under 6 criteria used to assess and evaluate the performance of universities in achieving SDGs periodically and annually.
