Cairo University’s Integrated Strategy for Sustainable Development
摘要
Over the previous years, the sustainable development (SD) issue has become an increasing concern for different academic communities in Egypt. Cairo University (CU) has established several steps toward reducing its own negative impacts on the environment, society, and economy, in addition to developing many sustainable action plans, programs and research curricula according to the UI GreenMetric Ranking ( https://greenmetric.ui.ac.id/rankings/rankings-overview ) among universities. CU was a pioneer among Egyptian universities to implement sustainability in different aspects such as localization of the university’s sustainability policies, education and research, development of the university’s urban environment, campus operations, transportation, environmental quality, waste management, community engagement, agreements and cooperation protocols, and workshops. The establishment of a sustainability office (SO) under the umbrella of environmental and society service affairs was one of the most significant milestones toward the localization of the university’s sustainability policies. The SO established a green office in each faculty and institute, developed a sustainability pledge, and a guide for students to help them learn more about sustainability. The SO also created the sustainability plan and the sustainability action plan. Regarding research and education, about 65% of all courses available to the students at the university are sustainability related courses. Furthermore, all research calls in CU were directed to confront climate change. Additionally, crucial to lowering the campus’ carbon impact are sustainable transportation options.
