The abdominal cavity is a vulnerable region of the human body. In general, trauma to the abdomen is caused by blunt impact or by penetration. In automotive accidents, blunt impact is observed frequently, although the injury might not be apparent initially. Knowledge on the biomechanical response of the abdomen, corresponding injury mechanisms and appropriate injury predictors is still limited. This chapter summarises the state-of-the-art.
