Injuries to the spine often fall into two categories: high severity injuries, which may involve hard tissue fracture and damage to the spinal cord with a lesser frequency; and low severity injuries associated with sub-traumatic tissue damage and pain response, with a relatively high frequency of occurrence. This chapter discusses the different injury mechanisms for spine injuries along with injury criteria and aspects of injury prevention.
