Revolutionizing eLearning with Metaverse Technologies: Virtual Classrooms and Beyond
摘要
The COVID-19 pandemic exposed major vulnerabilities in traditional eLearning systems that require more innovative approaches to virtual education. This paper investigates the potential of metaverse technologies for revolutionizing online learning environments. Therefore, we adopted a holistic mixed method approach involving systematic literature review, expert interviews, and a controlled experiment with 500 students at different universities across various disciplines. The metaverse-based virtual classroom was compared to traditional eLearning platforms with regard to their differences in learning outcomes and user experience. The metaverse-enabled environment for learning shows significant differences, as it significantly improved knowledge retention by 37% against conventional online learning methods (p < 0.001). Significant results from key performance indicators reveal high returns on student engagement in the metaverse-enabled virtual classroom since the participants were offered an immersive and interactive experience to learn. The most critical factors through which such improvements will emerge include better spatial understanding, immediate collaborative opportunities, and three-dimensional representations of rather complex ideas. Our investigation shows that metaverse technologies are a paradigm-changing form of digital education. Our findings lead us to the conclusion that strategic uses of metaverse elements would be capable of fundamentally transforming digital learning in ways that open it up to more dynamic, more personal, and more effective teaching in the digital world.
