Vaginal Laser Treatment
摘要
Lasers have gained significant popularity for treating gynecological and urogynecological conditions, such as stress urinary incontinence, genitourinary syndrome of menopause, and vaginal prolapse. This trend has emerged alongside growing concerns about potential adverse outcomes associated with the use of mesh procedures for treating stress urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. As a result, there is increased scrutiny and discussion surrounding the adoption of new technologies and interventions within the specialty. Notably, we have only speculation about the precise mechanism of action of lasers in treating the aforesaid conditions. Additionally, the quality of existing studies is generally low, and although complications appear minimal, there is a lack of long-term safety data. Before endorsing the widespread use of lasers for gynecological and urogynecological conditions, it is essential to conduct high-quality studies with extended follow-up periods, to systematically report adverse events, and to provide objective measures of outcomes. Until these goals are met, the use of lasers to treat the mentioned conditions should be restricted to well-designed research protocols. Furthermore, the reporting of complications associated with laser use is generally incomplete and should be improved.
