The use of mesh and graft materials in female reconstructive pelvic surgery has evolved significantly since their initial application in the 1970s, particularly with the advent of transvaginal mesh kits in the 1990s. Despite initial widespread adoption for the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence, mesh use became increasingly controversial due to reports of serious complications, including pain, dyspareunia, and mesh exposure. Ultimately, by 2019, all transvaginal mesh products for prolapse were off the market in the United States. As a result, many current providers lack familiarity with historical mesh products, posing challenges in the evaluation and management of patients. To help providers, a database was created and is available in mobile application form for clinical use.
