Complications can unfortunately accompany surgical care and may occur even with the least invasive, routine procedures. Reporting of surgical complications has been historically inconsistent, making it difficult to compare outcomes and identify areas for quality improvement. Commonly used systems include the Clavien–Dindo classification system, and more recently, the Comprehensive Complication Index (CCI). Specific to female pelvic reconstruction, the International Urogynecological Association (IUGA) and International Continence Society (ICS) introduced systems to classify complications of both prosthetic use and native tissue repair in female pelvic surgery. This chapter reviews the aforementioned classifications as they apply to female reconstructive surgeries.
