This chapter examines four picture bookspicture books inspired by poetrypoetry or lyrics associated with World War IWWI and other conflicts involving AustraliaAustralia. Through close analysis of the interplay between text and illustrationsillustrations, six discourses are identified: (1) HeritageHeritage, exploring culturalcultural contexts of Australian soldierssoldier; (2) Nation as an impetus for actionNation as an impetus for action, examining nationalistic themes; (3) Discourse of distanceDiscourse of distance, highlighting physical and psychological separations caused by warwar; (4) Industrialisation vs natural environmentIndustrialisation vs natural environment, investigating environmental and human destruction due to war technologies; (5) War as futile and protracted impact of traumaWar as futile and protracted impact of trauma, addressing the enduring effects of conflictconflict; and (6) Discourses of peacepeace, reconciliationreconciliation, and trucetruce, focusing on peacemaking efforts. Each book contributes to a unified anti-war message, emphasising the futility of war through depictions of traumatrauma, death, and lossloss. Rich in narrativenarrative biography and evocative illustrations using muted tones, these texts personalise historicalhistorical events, offering powerful tools for high school curricula in EnglishEnglish, Humanities, and the Arts to foster understanding of the human impact of war.
