This volume explores human-animal interactions (HAIs) within the context of climate change and disaster, emphasizing their often-overlooked role in disaster and emergency management (DEM). HAIs provide vital support in times of crisis, including through the close bonds of companion animals and their guardians and through the integration of animals into search and rescue or other post-disaster services, yet are largely absent from policy and practice. Integrating HAIs across all DEM phases—mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery and reconstruction—advances both human and animal welfare and promotes the emerging concept of trans-species justice. This first-of-its-kind collection spans diverse disasters, animal types, and global contexts, offering critical insights for building resilience and informing HAI-centered research, policy, and practice.
