We discuss the method of quadrature of John Wallis, and then the different approaches of Newton, Descartes, and Leibniz to the problem of tangents to a curve. We explain how Weierstrass formalized those ideas and we present a self-contained introduction to Riemann’s integration and to the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.
