This research investigates the impact of solo travel on mental health. A qualitative methodology was employed involving 20 participants who travelled alone in the past two years. The findings revealed how travellers self-identify and what contributes to their self-development. Most participants reported that solo travel enhanced self-esteem, satisfaction in life and a sense of personal growth During the trip, the solo travellers used calming strategies like journaling and mindfulness techniques to help them rest. This study also discusses the interplay of solitude and social interaction while offering suggestions on how problems like safety measures and operating outside an individual’s comfort zone changed and empowered people in ways they never appreciated when living in their comfort zones. This indicates that traveling alone profoundly influences psychological self-perception and self-regard. The sample may have imposed self-reporting bias due to the small sample size and did not take into consideration other possible cultural influences. Future studies should adopt a mixed methods approach, with a quasi-experimental design focusing on the life stories of independent travellers. The results accentuate the importance of self-exploration in the context of emotional growth and self-development through travel.
