Recognized as one of the nation’s outstanding experts in power plant controls and process instrumentation throughout her career, Ada Pressman’s first job after obtaining her bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering was as a design and application engineer. She later joined Bechtel solidifying her expertise in control systems for every type of power plant, from coal to natural gas to nuclear, and served as a significant trailblazer. She was involved in early design toward more automatic controls of equipment and systems, new packaging techniques, and breakthroughs in improved precision and reliability of sensors and controls. She designed controls to deal with unique environmental and efficiency issues for the fossil-fuel and nuclear plants with which she was involved. At Bechtel, she actively encouraged women to join the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and ensured Bechtel corporate support for the organization. Active throughout her career (and after retirement) in SWE, Pressman became the first “three-pin” President—being selected as a Fellow, serving as Society President, and being honored as an Achievement Award recipient in 1976. Pressman, who served on the Society’s Board of Trustees for many years, was also an avid golfer; her golf clubs were always close at hand.
