The first American woman engineer or scientist to live and work in Antarctica, Irene C. Peden opened new frontiers for women. A woman of many firsts, Peden was the first woman to receive a PhD in electrical engineering from Stanford University, the first woman faculty member in engineering at the University of Washington, and the first woman on the board of directors of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. An expert in radio science and electromagnetic wave propagation scattering, Peden was a strong advocate for women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and fought for equal treatment of women for years. The 1973 recipient of the Society of Women Engineers’ Achievement Award, Peden received many other awards in recognition of her technical expertise and contributions to professional organizations and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1993.
