A few years after the close of World War II (WWII), the world was transforming technically, politically, and culturally. Hardware discoveries would change how the world listened to music, heard their news, made calculations, harnessed energy, cooked and cleaned their homes, viewed the stars above them, and ultimately grew nations and their peoples. Transistor production ramped up, and products using these new, significantly smaller electronic devices entered offices, universities, companies, homes, and space. Energy production and flight developments led to more growth in the coming decades. During this period, small numbers of women graduated with degrees in engineering, and the number of working women engineers dropped after WWII. The Society of Women Engineers was incorporated in 1952, grew in scope and size, and, in those first years, awarded five Achievement Awards to notable women engineering legends. The middle class grew, and women’s role in the home and industry expanded after WWII, unleashing powerful cultural changes. Primarily a time of economic stability, noted legal decisions in the US brought civil rights and women’s rights and began decades of upheaval and uplift.
