Dorothy Martin Simon’s contributions to space engineering, especially with aerospace combustion and the development of polymers, were critical to the success of the Apollo space program. She made important contributions while at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) regarding heat shield construction and improvement of rocket engine designs. Her work with the kinetics of polymerization of vinyl compounds, especially the vinyl cyanide polymer, contributed to the mass production of Orlon and Dacron at DuPont. She became Avco’s first female corporate officer and was the first woman trustee at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Dr. Simon was honored by the Society of Women Engineers as the 1966 Achievement Award recipient.
