Mabel MacFerran Rockwell was an electrical engineer who was recognized by the Society of Women Engineers with the Achievement Award in 1958 for substantial contributions in the field of electrical control systems. Rockwell also made significant contributions to high-voltage power generation and distribution, aeronautical manufacturing research and development, and electrical system integration within facilities. Rockwell was responsible for the design and fielding of high-voltage power generation equipment and transmission lines from the Hoover Dam. Rockwell developed processes for spot welding and deep draw metal forming. Her efforts led to spot welding being allowed on aircraft primary structure and vast improvements in production quality and rate which contributed significantly to Lockheed Aircraft Company’s ability to supply aircraft for World War II. Rockwell also worked for the US Navy and Westinghouse on control systems for naval vehicles, including the control system for the submarine-launched Polaris missile.
