G. B. Smith and J. R. R. Tolkien: Two First World War Poets
摘要
This chapter places the poetry of both G. B. Smith and J. R. R. Tolkien in the context of the more famous British war poets that emerged from the First World War. It looks across A Spring Harvest questioning the chronology as presented in the final edition, but also explores the main themes that emerge from Smith’s poetry as he faced the conditions on the Western Front. Then, using the recent editions of Tolkien’s verse (first available in 2024), the chapter considers how the latter’s poetry develops from his days before seeing active service, to his time on the Somme, and then his period of reflection in 1917–1918. The chapter considers how ‘typical’ Smith and Tolkien were compared with modern-day expectations of the poetry from 1914 to 1918.
