This chapter interrogates the evolving nexus between globalisation, multilateralism, and African agency through a comparative political economy lens of the OAU/Lagos Plan of Action and AU/NEPAD. It explores Africa’s shift from dependency and marginalisation under Cold War bipolarity and Bretton Woods neo-liberalism towards pragmatic engagement in a dynamic, multipolar global order. Emphasising NEPAD’s role in regional integration, governance reforms, and multilateral negotiation, the chapter analyses Africa’s repositioning via frameworks like AfCFTA, APRM, and infrastructure-led development. While constraints remain, such as compliance deficits and global economic asymmetries, AU-NEPAD reveals Africa’s potential to assert agency through open regionalism and civil society mobilisation towards Agenda 2063.
