Climate Resilient Agriculture for Ensuring Food Security

Climate change is an extreme threat to global food security which in turn, needs climate resilient agriculture. For to be able to use the concept of climate resilient agriculture for sustainable food production and indeed food security it deserves to have a clear view for the principles tactics and technology that are presented in this chapter. Climate change and agriculture system The effects of climate change on agricultural system are described in this Chapter. These impacts take place through temperatures increasing, patterns of precipitation changing and an increase in extreme weather events. These impacts can also lead to reduced agricultural productivity, declining water availability, and altered growing seasons. The chapter presents the ways to help farmers cope with climate change and effect adaptation through integrated pest and nutrient management, agroforestry, conservation agriculture, and climate-smart agriculture practices. The chapter also highlights the importance of technology use that may enhance productivity and efficiency in agriculture, including drones and precision agriculture and information systems on climate. The need for an enabling environment to facilitate the shift to climate smart agriculture is explored, including policy and support systems as well as international and national instruments, financial mechanisms and capacity development. It illustrates the importance of ecosystem services, biodiversity and fertile soil to the robustness of farming systems. It demonstrates the way forward for enhanced agricultural productivity, resilience and sustainability, by showcasing the successful application of climate resilient agriculture practices across diverse landscapes and ecosystems. These approaches and technologies enable food security for present and future generations even in times of climate change. For farmers, policy makers, scientists and anyone who cares about sustaining our food system, this chapter provides a comprehensive look at climate resilient agriculture.
