The Monolith Crumbles: Digital Diversification and Television News in South Africa
摘要
Is there still a place for traditional, scheduled television news in the age of social media “side door” news sources? This chapter asks the question of South African visual news—the most popular news type globally. Social news increases every year, with print and radio in a steep decline. However, television (and, by that extension, visual and on-demand news) is still popular in almost all countries. How well is South Africa placed in this trend where data is expensive, streaming access is limited and difficult, and digitalisation is hampered by both corruption and geographical problems? This chapter tracks the television news sources in South Africa historically and offers a typology of current visual, on-demand news across platforms with an aim to explore how South African (visual) news places in the global field. Despite the apparent diversification of the television news landscape, a glaring problem remains: as some South Africans steam ahead with the Fourth Industrial Revolution, others are rolled over and left behind. This chapter argues that the switch to “side-door” news sources and the predominance of online, social news is a luxury offered to the privileged. The rest are simply residual.
