Understanding the significance of television’s impact on consciousness-raising and public discourse in South Africa necessitates an exploration of its historical context. From the apartheid era to the dawn of democracy, television has played a dual role: serving both as a mirror reflecting the nation’s complexities and as a catalyst for change. This chapter uses three case studies that highlight different applications of intertextuality, particularly its role as a mechanism for consciousness-raising, within South African television in the democratic dispensation. Through a descriptive analysis of the youth TV drama Yizo Yizo, the hospital drama Soul City, and the situational comedy Emzini Wezinsizwa, this chapter aims to illuminate its profound influence on shaping public opinion, promoting social cohesion, and contributing to the country’s ongoing quest for equality and democracy.
