In clinical practice, femoral artery pseudoaneurysms are the result of the catheterization of the femoral artery for diagnostic and more commonly therapeutic interventions for coronary and peripheral arterial diseases. Following diagnostic procedures, its incidence rate is 0.05%–2.0% and the incidence increases to 2%–6% following therapeutic interventions. Femoral artery pseudoaneurysms smaller than 2.0 cm without associated pain can be followed with serial duplex imaging. Symptomatic pseudoaneurysms, or aneurysms greater than 2.0 cm in diameter, should be treated with ultrasound-guided thrombin injection or operative repair. The use of closure device as compared to manual compression following femoral artery access is associated with increased incidence of femoral artery pseudoaneurysms.
