The external iliac artery becomes the common femoral artery under the inguinal ligament. The common femoral artery is accompanied by the common femoral vein on its medial side, along with the femoral canal, are embedded within the femoral sheath. The length of common femoral artery is variable, and its main branch is profunda femoris or deep femoral artery, commonly arising from its posterolateral aspect and continuing as the superficial femoral artery. Superficial femoral artery then becomes the popliteal artery after piercing the adductor hiatus. Popliteal artery gives off its first major branch—anterior tibial artery—and continues as the tibioperoneal trunk, dividing into posterior tibial artery and peroneal artery. Anterior tibial artery becomes the dorsalis pedis artery in front of the ankle. The deep veins accompany the main arteries of the lower extremity.
