Digitalisation in the Construction Industry

The construction industry globally is berated for its slow adoption of digital technologies, which has significantly influenced its innovativeness. To this end, this chapter, through the review of existing studies, explored the nature of the construction industry and its attributed challenges. The chapter further explored the different digital technologies used in construction and gave, with developed countries being at the forefront of employing emerging digital tools. However, the construction industry in developing countries stands the chance to leapfrog into the digital era by exploiting their inherent potential to use collaborative approaches, foster a culture of innovation, ensure digital skills are developed, and reform existing policies and regulations. The chapter revealed that the unique nature of the global construction industry has placed several limitations on the effective adoption of digital technologies. Issues revolving around the cost of acquiring, using and maintaining digital technologies, security and privacy, interoperability and compatibility, among others, were identified as leading causes of poor implementation of digital technologies in many countries. Therefore, addressing these salient issues is important for the digitalisation of construction through emerging digital technologies.
