This chapter shows that Dao 道 is described as the source of the universe as well as the ground of the myriad things. As the source, it generates the myriad things; as the ground, it continues to support and rear them after they are generated. In addition to defining and explaining this philosophical concept, they summarize the four main features of Dao as seen in the Laozi: (1) Dao is both being and non-being; (2) Dao is absolute and permanent; (3) Dao is beyond sense-perception; and (4) Dao is spontaneous and un-self-aware.

摘要

This chapter shows that Dao 道 is described as the source of the universe as well as the ground of the myriad things. As the source, it generates the myriad things; as the ground, it continues to support and rear them after they are generated. In addition to defining and explaining this philosophical concept, they summarize the four main features of Dao as seen in the Laozi: (1) Dao is both being and non-being; (2) Dao is absolute and permanent; (3) Dao is beyond sense-perception; and (4) Dao is spontaneous and un-self-aware.
