Metallurgical Testing of Copper, Zinc, and Cobalt Extraction from Samsun and Küre Copper Smelter Tailings via Pressure Oxidative Leaching
摘要
As the global gradeGrade of ores decline, reprocessing of tailings to recover valuable metalsMetal presents a unique opportunity to provide further economic gain from what was once considered waste. The Samsun and Küre smeltersSmelter in Northern Türkiye produce waste slagsSlag that are primarily composed of fayaliteFayalite (Fe2SiO4) but contain metalsMetal such as copperCopper, zincZinc, and cobaltCobalt. To support process designProcess design and development of metalsMetal recoveryRecovery from the waste tailings, experimental testworkTestwork was conducted to investigate the feasibility of pressure oxidative leachingLeaching (POL) for metal extractionMetal extraction. A bench scale test program established key operating conditionsOperating conditions including feed pulp density, temperature, oxygen overpressure, sulfuric acidSulfuric acid addition, and retention time. The co-processingProcessing pyritic concentrateConcentrate as a supplemental heat/acid source was evaluated to enhance project synergies. A 96-h continuous autoclaveAutoclave pilot plant campaign was conducted after batch testing, achieving metalMetal leachingLeaching extractionsExtraction as high as 89% for Cu, 90% for Zn, and 96% for Co. While achieving high metal extractionsMetal extraction, leachingLeaching of high-silicate slagSlag tailings presented unique process challenges. POL of fayaliteFayalite to liberate metalsMetal forms silicaSilica gel that can negatively impact overall leachingLeaching, acid regeneration, filterability, and material handlingHandling. This paper discusses the testworkTestwork results and engineeringEngineering implications of leachingLeaching slagSlag.
