Alternative Cooling Medium System for Safe Furnace Operation

These leaks could result in equipmentEquipment damage, physical injuries, and even fatalities due to explosions caused by hot liquid metalMetal or matteMatte being mixed with water. Several alternatives have been proposed in industry, such as ionic liquidsIonic liquid andMono-ethylene glycol mono-ethylene glycolGlycol (MEG). This paper discusses Tenova’s MEGtec™ system, utilizing MEG as an alternative coolingCooling medium for furnaceFurnace coolingCooling systems. Test work was conducted to assess the coolingCooling efficiencyEfficiency and the explosion risk of MEG compared to water. The tests demonstrate MEG as a viable alternative to water as a coolingCooling medium in furnaceFurnace applications. The results from the test work are discussed.
